24 hour lounge

Postby Merrybabe on Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:22 pm

Okay, I have just watched the new BBC drama Sherlock and wanted to post some thoughts on the BBC Points of View board where I am an occasional contributor.

Imagine my serious annoyance when I found that their board shuts down at 2300. Never mind the fact that such a time only gives people 30 minutes to post after a major drama airs, it's flipping inconsiderate to anyone who doesn't live in the UK and for whom the board's opening times are incompatible with waking hours.

I realise I may have had more than one glass too many but this has really got up my nose.

So...a big Thumbs Up to the TV Lounge for being here night and day, and for realising that some people are not stirring the cocoa by 2301. I hadn't realised before how much I take that for granted.

PS Sherlock was bl**dy brilliant. The BBC won't let me say so, so I'll take advantage of this board being open to do so here.

I do it, but I don't enjoy it.

That isn't very good for it to close that early.

Sherlock was good wasn't it. I was a bit cautious because I really like the series with Edward Hardwicke and Jeremy Brett but I did really enjoy Sherlock. I thought Watson was very very good. I was worried that they'd make him a bumbling idiot like some series did (not the Brett Series :D ) but he is smart and gives as good as he gets. I was going to post a quote from it but I don't know if that counts as a spoiler. It's not important to the plot.

Well, Sherlock was quite inventive, wasn't it? It has just about restored my faith in Dr. Who writer Steven Moffat, who while making some great episodes, also allowed some really bad filler episodes to be made by him/ other writers. (I.E. The Vampires one)

There was only one bit towards the end where I thought lazy writing had played it's part. (Spoilers for those who haven't seen it/have taped it and havent got to watch it yet.)

Highlight text bellow to read it:

Towards the end when Holmes asks the Cabbie how he gets his victims in, The Cabbie withdraws a gun, and says something like: "Well, I don't need this to make you follow me in." Then later, when the Cabbie presents Holmes with the Bottle puzzle, Holmes suggests he could just pick neither and walk off. The Cabbie then withdraws the gun again, but he said earlier that he wasn't going to need it on Holmes? :? Slightly confusing, but at least it doesn't ruin the overall story too much.

One of my favourite quotes from this is:

WATSON: "Well, that was the most stupid thing I have ever done."

HOLMES: "Hey, you Invaded Afghanistan!"

WATSON: "Yeah, but that wasn't just me!"

YEah the vampire episode was bad.

Two of my favourite lines (both from Watson) were: (sorry these are written from memory so there is likely to be mistakes.)

Watson : You know I do have a phone. All that stuff earlier was very clever but you could have just phoned me...on my phone.

Mycroft: You don't seem very frightened.
Watson: You don't seem very frightening.

The first episode of Sherlock was good...The second one I'm less sure about. There are a few things that simply don't add up for me, and in general it just wasn't as good INMHO. :o
