Hi Paul,

Geraldine James (from Pay Off) is what I call an unconventional beauty.

Yeah you're right - not a dolly bird by any means, but still a great looking woman. Better in 1976 than 2006 though! I expect I look better now than I will in 2036.
Cheers!

Geraldine's been a bit of a looker over the past few years, however she was on TV yesterday, publicising the DVD release of Band Of Gold, and age is beginning to catch up with her.
I probably still would though... :P

I hadn't realised that Geraldine James was awarded an OBE and that her role in The Sweeney was her first TV role!
I've just done a search on the net for pictures of her - purely in the interests of research into "unconventional beauty" (© H&G Image ) and found this link:
Geraldine James
It's not the most flattering picture of her that I found, but she does look pretty good in this one:
Geraldine again

I’m flattered

It just popped into my head one day as a way of describing someone of the fairer sex who as Paul1978 says is not a dolly bird by any means, but nevertheless is attractive although not in the conventional sense :P

No way is it intended to be a polite phrase for ugly!!!!

Oh my god, not the best pics!
In the Series 3 box-set, she is interviewed just before the "Pay Off" episode. Presume this was filmed in 2004 and she looks loads better there than on the pics linked to.
I might change my mind on the strength of these, but if we're going on how she looked in 1976, I'll stick with it.
Cheers!

Any comments I make on here about the looks of Sweeney birds refer to how they were in the show or that period, seeing them today can spoil the illusion sometimes ;)

You're not kidding, and to think all it took was a small bag of lychees! If George had thought of that earlier he could've saved himself years of aggro.

I couldn't for the life of me think where I had seen Rosemarie Dunham before, then I remembered she played Michael Caine's landlady in Get Carter (1971).

I've been in love with Lesley-Anne Down all my life.

Geraldine James I must say comes across on that intro to Pay Off as a genuinely nice lady, and how lovely that she is so grateful to The Sweeney for laucnhing her career.
